To the nine year old child below.....get off the computer and let the adults discuss parenting issues!!! As for the person who asked the question I would weigh the pros and cons about medication for your child. Meds do have side effects, some of which are not pleasant..
References :
I hate it when children get on here and pretend to be adults and add their ideas.

It depends on the child. My sons do well with counselors, but my daughter does not talk to anyone. We went for some family counseling and the counselor was meeting with each child on a regular basis, except my 2yo and my daughter, because she would never speak to her.
References :
My children hated it. They didn't like opening up to strangers. I found although none were a great experiance with them, women were better because they seemed more sincere.
References :
My youngest daughter was very violent towards my oldest daughter at age 5 and her sister was 7 and she would get physical with tree branches mop handles large rocks etc. and hit us with them. Our primary physician sent us to a psychologist and he had her hospitalized at a psychiatric hospital for evaluation. She was evaluated and diagnosed with adhd. She didn't do her school work, stole from other students and kicked me so hard in the chest that I had an irregular heartbeat and had to be taken to the emergency room. For everybody else she was a little angel. One time I was restraining her from injuring her sister and my foot got caught in a hole and she twisted back and forth and broke my ankle. She would point at my cast and say "I did that." Childrens Services removed both of my children from my home because I could not control this child. Counseling didn't help and neither did medication.
References :
Don't worry. I am only nine years old and I have a psychiatrist and a psychologist too. I have ADHD (Attention Defcit Hyperactive Disorder) and OCD (obsession compulsive disorder) sometimes I feel about it, but then I look on the bright side and realize that I am definitely no different than any other child in this world. I am experiencing the same thing as your son is. I am a straight A student in school, but sometimes, I get a little bit impulsive about things. Don't treat your son any differently, and what ever you do, don't tell any friends, because that is like a living nightmare for me. Personally, pills work very well. I don't take anything for my OCD, (because it is quite normal for kids to have it, and ever child gets hyper every once in a while, am I right?) but I do take a certain pill called Focalin for my ADHD. It is meant for adults, and children, I haven;t had any side effects on it yet, I have been taking it for about 5-6 months now, and boy does it help my ADHD and focusing. I hope that this information helped you!
References :
Psychiatrists are medical doctors that prescribe medication. Counselors don't prescribe medication. They give advice.
