How can I study or work with ADHD?
23 Oct 2009
Behavioral therapy has worked the best for me. I need to study, I just go to a place without distractions. It makes studying 100 times easier.
Cognitive therapy? A bust. No matter how many times I tell myself that I need to focus and ignore the distractions, it barely ever happens.
Drugs? I’ve heard of Ritalin. I might start using it.
I’ve been through ADHD in earlier years, and please take this into consideration, medication is a last resort. Yes, the benefits are obvious, concentrating better, and less hyperactivity, but the cons bury the pros. think about it, when you take a medication that makes you act differently, is it completely making you something you’re not. It’s changing your thoughts into things that aren’t supposed to be there. can you even imagine what that feels like? Ask yourself, do you want to be someone you’re not? A lot of people have benefited from ADHD, look up the famous people that have/had ADHD. Just learn how to focus, it’ll take time, but trust me, medication is hell on earth, when i was taking medication for my ADHD, i literally went insane for 2 years. It’s not something you need/want.

2009 Oct 14 1There are some good medications out there. It takes time to find the one that works for you and the right dosage. It could take years to find the correct medication.

personal experience with Ritalin/other drugs.

2009 Oct 14 3Well think about ADHD in as its specific symptoms that you have– not as a label of ADHD.
Something that alot of Adhd people need to retrain their brains to do is be mindful. Recognize when you are losing concentration, how often, what things do your mind wander to. And make a list of these things. It will make it easier for you to monitor yourself if you see where your mind is wandering too. The next step is to recognize that you have lost focus and just keep bringing yourself back to what you are supposed to be doing at that moment.
Ritalin is not your best bet, as it messes with your brain chemistry, it may work for the 12 or however many hours you are on it, but then once you are off it you will really suffer the rebound effect of being off of it.
As odd as it sounds, exercise does similar things to your brain chemistry as drugs do, but it balances them to a perfect ratio– overstimulated, and not understimulated. Try to get enough exercise. (Enough for one person might be 30 mins a day, but to another person might be 2 hours, try to find your right amount)
Next cut out all caffiene, articifial colours, sweeteners, refined sugars, preservatives etc. You don’t realize how much these things can contribute to ADHD symptoms until you cut them out.
Make a schedule, and set an alarm (egg timer or cellphone) to go off 15 mins before you should be switching tasks, and then again when you actually should switch. It depends alot on time management and just forcing yourself through it.
