He was getting very aggresive before we put him on the meds and now it seems as though he is sluggish and wants to sleep all the time, it feels like a win lose situation. can you help? I don't want to take him off the meds, but some insite on how i can give him more energy.
Ok, so I'm not judged anymore let me tell you a little about how all this came about, my son was very aggressive, i mean to a point where he was pysically hurting others. I have been through 11 daycares where he would only stay a month then they would kick him out. I as a mom in the economy today can't quit my job, so daycare is the only option for me. I had to help my child.
Discuss this with the doctor who prescribed the medication. Tell him or her exactly what's going on, what you notice about your son. See if s/he can adjust his medication. With psychiatry it's a lot of guess work. So you have to watch him and make sure he is getting the proper care.
Bipolar is caused by a chemical imbalance. Most of the time it is diagnosed in ones late teens to early adulthood. Sometimes it can show it's first symptoms as early at 3. One of my friends sons was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder when he was 7. He was placed on medication. He was doing great in school, had a lot of friends, he was your all around happy and healthy kid. Then his psychiatrist retired. So, my friend had to find another one.
Most of the doctors didn't believe a child that young could have bipolar. So the first one him to took him off the medication. That was a nightmare. My friend found another doctor and he put the boy on different medication. It helped but not enough. This went on for a year and a half. She finally went to one doctor and demanded her son be put back on the original medications. The doctor was hesitant but put him back on the medication. Now her son is back to his old happy self.
You know your son the best. you should not let doctors, with there book knowledge, or any one else tell you what is best for your son.
You could also ask the pharmacist who fills your prescriptions if sluggishness and the need to sleep is a side effect that will go away eventually.

2009 Jan 29 1Maybe you should have went to a dietitian instead. Medications in excess can be harmful to the development of your child.

2009 Jan 29 2How in the hell did they determine that at age 3? I'd really get a 2nd opinion.

2009 Jan 29 3Are you kidding??? A three year old? Of course he`s sluggish, these are powerful drugs. There`s no way you can give him more energy, you`ll just have to wait until his system get accustomed to the medication.I`m wondering what sane doctor would put a toddler on these drugs???

2009 Jan 29 5Sounds like one of the medications needs to be reduced a bit. Everyone metabolizes medications differently and he might need a little adjustment. Talk to the doctor about your concerns, if he/she poo poos your concern, find another doctor.
It's hard to treat children that small because they can't communicate. I'm even questioning how the diagnosis was made. Perhaps a second opinion would be a very good idea.

2009 Jan 29 6Doping up a 3-year-old for having excess energy and mood swings? Was this prescribed by a family doctor? I strongly suggest you see a child psychologist or psychiatrist, someone who specializes in mental health.
Anecdotally, one of my cousins was on this stuff for years and we actually noticed major improvements in his behavior once his mom took him *off* the stuff. He's now a teenager and he's very polite, respectful, and has found creative outlets for his energy. This was all through a change in parenting and working with a counselor. I think that our chronically over-worked teachers don't want to deal with slightly troublesome children, and the pharmaceutical industry is all-to-eager to sell you drugs.

2009 Jan 29 7A three year old can be diagnosed with bipolar??? Jeez. In my day it was called being a toddler. lol
How long has he been on the meds? If it's less than a month or so it might just a temporary side-effect that will wear off.

2009 Jan 29 8I feel you in this situation all over. My little brother was diagnosed with many things such as ADHD. What he might be getting is called rebound, where the meds might be rebounding and causing him to react tired. Or perhapes all of those meds together aren't the best choices for your son. Consider talking to your doctor about getting him meds that last longer, or be more indirect about what he is taking. Just keep a watchful eye on him. Who knows, maybe his body is just taking it's time getting used to it. Good Luck.

2009 Jan 29 9Whoever diagnosed your son was wrong. Its practically impossible to diagnose bipolar in a 3 year old, probably ADHD as well. You need a second opinion. Get him off those medications. Of course he is sluggish. Keep in mind that his brain is still developing, he should not be on all those meds. I'm surprised any doctor prescribed 3 different medications for a 3 year old. He needs intensive behavior therapy. See a specialist for that. The good thing about behavior therapy is that it works, it won't destroy his brain, and it's effects are lasting whereas with medication, when he stops taking it, the behaviors will return. It's harder and probably more expensive.

2009 Jan 29 11I was in the same boat as you with my son, and I was against using meds. The techniques in this article really did the trick for my boy. He's getting straight A's now and is very well behaved.
