Doesn't that just defeat the purpose, or is the purpose just so teachers don't have to handle unruly children? If I remember correctly, when I was a child on Ritalin, I had problems focusing (moreso when I was on the pill than off it.)
Now, I look at my friend's children, or rather one in particular, who seems to have a problem with staring off into space when she's supposed to be focusing on her schoolwork. She's on medicine to treat her ADHD, but all it seems to do is subdue her and make her space out.
So, if the medicine is causing this to happen, what purpose does it really serve? Is it for the child's benefit, or for the adults'?
Here's the problem… Child Protective Services are pushing the whole ADD/ADHD and medication thing on my friend's kids… I guess maybe they get kickbacks from the pharmaceutical companies or something, because I can't see how turning a child into a zombie can be mistaken for "protecting" them.
I have two children on add/adhd meds and they do not space out when on the medication. In fact both of there teachers have said that they are more focused and do better in class when they are on the medication than with out it.
Its not until later when the pills have worn off that they begin spacing out and stuff.
I myself have known a few people years ago on the meds that did space out like zombies but not all kids do,so maybe it just depends on the kid.

2007 Oct 09 1Most people do not know how or care to learn how to handle "difficult" children so they would rather label them with ADD/ADHD or even bipolar and drug them. Yes the meds can make children and adults like walking zombies. I have seen it to many times before.

2007 Oct 09 2I was diagnosed with ADHD when i was a kid, and took 4+ meds for it (not at the same time, and one was ridalin). The meds are meant to keep the kid, not focused, but calm…very calm…zombieish-walking dead kinda calm. It may keep them from yelling and talking and messing with stuff while they are supposed to be focussing, but it simply replaces that with them being just a drab, dull kid that doesnt do anything and can stare at a blank wall for hours. I was later diagnosed with Bipolar after they realized that just diagnosing me with ADHD and making me a temp-zombie might not be good for my health…if i were you, id tell ur friend to take that kid off that goddam ritalin and opt for seeing if there might be another problem other than ADD/ADHD, cause those two are just excuses for pathetic adults who would rather see there kids be empty shells than actually deal with them…Kids are kids, they are entergetic, and honestly, i doubt the parents or teachers were focused and calm when they were the kids age…im not saying meds arent needed and mental issues dont exist, but ADD and ADHD is just an excuse to make kids calm by drugging them up.
I would also like to add (for the first comment on this question) that ADD and ADHD are crap diagnosii, but Bipolar is actually a valid medical diagnosis , and biploar can be caused by : oversecretion of cortisol in the brain, excesive influx of calcium into brain cells, and possibly a faster-than-average supra chiasmatic nucleus located in the hypothalamus (regulates a person's circadian rhythm, the daily cycle of life). The most common is that a low or high level of a neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine or dopamine is the cause.

2007 Oct 09 4I was a child of the 80s, back when EVERY kid was ADD (before the H). And I was, of course, diagnosed as such. My mother, a very wise woman (just don't tell her I said that) refused to have me medicated.
Now that I'm an adult and have spent several years in health care, I realize what a blessing it was to have such a wise woman looking out for me.
First off, these "ADD/ADHD" Meds are new. They haven't been around long enough to see what lasting effects they have on a child. Ritalin (from my day) has shown addictive qualities. I don't fault ANY parent for not wanting their kid to be a guinea pig.
Furthermore, we're talking about a child, here… These kids aren't done growing and we're going to start messing with their brain chemistry? Um?!?! How damaging! Their bodies will never learn to regulate themselves if you start altering chemistry, now.
When will people learn that children are supposed to be energetic and playful?
<Gasp> Oh, heavens! These kids CAN'T rather be outside playing instead of in a school room learning about dangling participles. Get real, people.
Tell your friend to sprout a set and stand their ground.

2007 Oct 10 5my 15yr old son is adhd…he was on meds but we had the same problems when he took his pills he was not completely himself, kind of zombie like…his personality and his "spark" was gone and i hated it…he didn't like it either esp since it messed with his appetite so together we decided that meds just weren't working for him since he had been on several different meds in several years…
as for the state trying to push the meds on your friends kids..tell her to stand her ground..thats stupid that people can decide if your child needs meds that aren't "life saving"…
