i was just prescribed Strattera yesterday for ADHD but i'm self pay and Strattera would cost me a little over $300 per bottle of 30 pills, and i cannot afford that. is there any opther medicine like it out there, without leaning towards stimulants like Ritalin and Adderal, im trying to avoid those……. but if i can't are Ritalin type drugs cheaper???
Hi: I have gone through similar incidents as you of being prescribed drugs I could not afford. Usually you can ask your doctor to prescribe a drug that has a generic form. I did that very recently.
Strattera does work on norepinephrine, but it is not an SNRI. Maybe you were thinking of Serzone. Here is a link with info on Strattera: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strattera. Note in that link there is info that you might find relevant. I pasted it below:
"Full therapeutic effects of atomoxetine [Straterra] may take at least a week to be felt. Amoxetine should be taken for 6 – 8 weeks before deciding whether it is effective or not. Many people respond to amoxetine who don't respond to stimulants. Atomoxetine has a low abuse potential. Atomoxetine may be preferred over amphetamine based stimulants in patients with psychiatric disorders, those who cannot tolerate stimulants and those with a substance misuse history. Therapy is usually initiated by gradually increasing the dose to minmise side effects and if the individual is on stimulants a gradual titration down of the stimulant dose. again to minimise side effects. Users should expect to feel tired and groggy for a few weeks.
Eventually, the system adapts to the drug and the benefits can be felt. Users are recommended to continue taking the drug for at least three weeks before deciding to discontinue its use."
Below is a link to meds that can be used for ADHD. Unfortunately, most of them fall into the stimulant category. There is a generic for Ritalin, which I have used myself. I am not sure if a generic for Adderall is out yet. Here is the list of meds for ADHD.
