Need help for my husband! He has taken ritalin but no difference.
Besides ritalin, the other most common drug is adderall. It's very similar to ritalin though, another stimulant. If ritalin doesn't work immediately, consider also that it might just be the dosage. Ritalin is indicated for up to 150mg doses I believe (different for concerta I'm sure, which is a gradual release version of ritalin), so he might just need a bit more. A common, non-stimulant option is Strattera, which is also prescribed for depression in Europe. Likewise, I hear Wellbutrin has helped some cases of attention disorder, that's another antidepressant/anxiety medication.
There's a few other option, but those are the popular ones. Tegretol is a VERY uncommon choice, it's an anticonvulsant used for people with seizure problems primarily, and it can be very dangerous… it often requires regular blood testing to make sure the drug level is okay and there isn't kidney or liver damage. Also consider that the diagnosis may not be quite right. I know for me, I tried ritalin, all the way up to 150mg doses, which helped me focus about half the time and gave me anxiety attacks the other half. I've come to realize that what the doctor saw as ADHD could easily be explained as various other aspects of my personality and moods.
There's not enough good literature and programs out there for adults, but there's a lot of sucessful learning programs devoted to training ADHD children to work around the disorder and learn good attention and management skills without drugs.

2007 Jul 28 3As an Energy Therapist I would recommend one of the many energy therapies. EFT, TAT, Whole Hearted Healing. Look on the home page of this group and you'll see more than enough help.
I used to have adult ADD but it's gone now. I've used my own system, which is some of what I've listed above. I can now focus like nobody's business. I still don't especially like sitting still for long periods of time, but I don't think that is unusual. I don't think we are meant to sit still for long periods of time.
Another thing I have found about ADD is that it is often related to personal trauma or stored trauma we've picked up from our genetic generational material. There are probably many reasons. Once we can find the root cause of the trauma the ADD vanishes.
Good luck. I don't think pills are the answer. They may be a quick fix but certainly not a good answer. They can also affect our brain chemistry. Do the research on line. It's there.
I hope he finds what he needs.

2008 Oct 13 7I take Vyvanse. It is a 3rd gen med that is from Shire, the same Co that makes Adderall. It has the most active amphetamine from Adderall, dexamfetamine, which is bonded to Lysine. The liver metabolizes the prodrug but clipping off the Lysine and gradually the amphetamine is released. The right dose will last 12-14 hours according to my doc. You don’t get the ups and downs as with Adderall and is better and smoother than Adderall XR. It also cannot be abused because snorting or smoking it does nothing because it is inactive until the Lysine is clipped off. I and my doc found the right dose for me by starting at 30mg’s for about a week which lasted about 5 hours. And then went up very slowly by 10mg’s. 80mgs will last 9-10 hrs for me while 90mgs 12-14hrs. Everyone is different because it totally depends on how fast or slow your liver metabolizes. A small kid might need 100mgs. A big man may need 30mgs. It is a great med. Many pdocs are moving most of their Adderall patients over to Vyvanse.
